Sport at Clifton is an important dimension of the broad scope of primary phase learning. Grades 3 to 7 participate in swimming, cricket, rugby, cross-country, athletics, tennis, hockey, squash and soccer. Every child is expected to play at least one team sport every term and can select from the variety of other sports available. Swimming is compulsory for all children from Grade R to 7 as it is a crucial life skill.
Our prime motivation for offering sport is to provide our children with an opportunity to:
• Exercise and develop their mental and physical potential
• Participate with others within a structured program in order to develop recognized and acceptable social skills.
• Develop confidence and have fun.
• Learn to cope within a competitive environment.
• Develop their self-esteem.
• Learn to give of their best at all times and in all situations.
• Develop certain basic skills that will encourage the children to go on to further these particular disciplines in the future.
Junior Primary Specific
At present the Junior Primary sports policy is one of mass participation with equal opportunities for every child in the phase. Sport in the Foundation Phase is important in developing muscle-tone for posture, strength and stamina in the various sporting disciplines as well as in daily situations. The basic skills of various games are also taught.
